Diversity Of Mammals In Sri Lanka

Of the 86 species of mammals , pride of place goes to the majestic elephant. Although rapid destruction of its habitat has depleted our elephant population .Sizable numbers can be seen in the Gal Oya ,Lahugala,Yala...National Parks. When we are talking about elephants we have to remember that the world most beautiful elephant species (sub-species) is this species who are endemic sub-species in Sri Lanka .

Extinction also threatens the island's biggest cat,the leopard.,although Wilpaththu National Park is justifiably proud of its leopard population .Also Yala National park is popular for leopards.
